BackStrengthening Care for Low Birth Weight Babies in Odisha
Family Participatory Care (FPC) and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) are proven, cost-effective approaches to saving low birth weight (LBW) babies. To bring these models to remote areas, the National Health Mission (NHM), Odisha, with support from the Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI), has introduced FPC-KMC in 18 remote Primary Health Centres (PHCs) through Public-Private Partnerships.
While some FPC-KMC units thrive, others struggle to meet performance goals. To bridge these gaps, NHM and NIPI have created "Learning Sites" in high-performing PHCs to foster cross-learning and ensure consistent, high-quality care for LBW infants across regions.
Three top-performing units—Dumurimunda (Nabarangapur), Paschimabad (Baleswar), and Gaudagotha (Ganjam)—have been designated as Learning Sites. These hubs will share their successful practices with underperforming units through structured learning visits. The visiting PHC teams participate in Introductory sessions on FPC-KMC protocols, Demonstrations of best practices, field visits to Special New-born Care Units (SNCUs), community engagement meetings and Action planning for implementation at their facilities.
This initiative is poised to Increase the percentage of LBW babies receiving care, Ensure better follow-up for discharged infants, Improve neonatal survival rates in Odisha’s most challenging regions.
Together, NHM and NIPI are creating a brighter future for LBW babies through collaboration and innovation for more on NIPI please visit www.nipi-cure.org
