Caring for Infants in Bihar: Home Based Care for Young Child (HBYC) program

Home Based Care for Young Child (HBYC) Program of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, is currently being implemented in 13 high focus districts of Bihar since 2021 with an objective of improving nutritional status of children in the age group of 3 months to 15 months adhering to age specific developmental milestones, management & referral of sick child and promotion of hand sanitization and hygiene. To address the need for program implementation and extension of HBYC program into 7 more districts of the state, State Health Society (SHSB) of Bihar organized a planning cum review meeting on 9th December, 2022. The purpose was to review the progress of ongoing implementation of HBYC program in 13 districts. The meeting also provided sensitization of NHM officials on HBYC from 7 more districts where HBYC program will be implemented from 2023.

Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI) as the lead partner for implementation of the HBYC program provided technical support for the conceptualization of the review cum sensitization meeting, preparation of training material and facilitated sessions with special focus on HBYC record keeping, Quality tool for monitoring of the HBYC training, Implementation status of HBYC Program till October 2022 along with holding of the HBYC periodic Assessment.

The meeting helped in improving quality of HBYC reporting in 13 high focus districts, initiation of pending trainings of ASHAs in the districts, ensuring supply of HBYC logistics to new districts and improvement of ASHA incentive payment system in the 13 high focus districts.
